Having a Financial Plan

You've made the decision to quit work for a while and stay home with your kids. But if you've even thought that giving up a paycheck means opting out of all money decisions, you need a reality check. Experts say it's especially important for at-home moms to stay closely involved in household finances -- and not to expect (or allow) their husband to take care of it all.

"Every woman needs to have a solid financial plan whether she's working or not," says Candace Bahr, a financial advisor in Carlsbad, California, and cofounder of the Women's Institute for Financial Education. "And a man is not a financial plan."

It's no fun to think about, but sometimes bad stuff happens: Your husband may surprise you by making some dumb investments or over-the-top purchases that put you both in financial straits. (Yup, you're responsible for any debt that he's racked up since you've been married.) You could end up divorced someday or, heaven forbid, as a widow with young kids. Someone could get sick. Or lose a job. The list goes on. Stay-at-home moms (SAHMs) need to be financially prepared for all those possibilities, says Bahr.

To make sure your financial house is built on solid ground, read up on the six things all SAHMs should know about money.

Know Your Worth

You may not think that you're contributing to the family's bottom line because you aren't bringing home a weekly paycheck. But think again: Salary.com (an online provider of salary data) estimates that the services of the average stay-at-home mom -- including housekeeping, cooking, doing laundry, driving kids around, and managing the household -- would amount to an annual income of $138,095.

If that doesn't convince you that you're valuable, consider this: By taking over the bulk of domestic chores, you're freeing up your husband to focus more of his time and energy on his career, an "investment" that can yield greater earning power for him. Fact is, he couldn't have made that investment without your support.

"So don't hesitate to insist that you have an equal say in financial matters," says Kristin Maschka, spokesperson for Mothers & More, a national networking and support group for moms. "Your job is just as important to the family's economic health as your husband's is."

Stay in the Loop

For a lot of couples, the setup goes something like this: The wife pays the day-to-day bills, but she lets her husband oversee the "big picture" stuff, like managing investments and planning for retirement. If that division of labor seems to be working for you, fine. But no matter how you split the responsibility, it's critical that each partner is fully informed about how the family's money is being invested, and is keeping close tabs on retirement accounts, college funds, and any debt the family has accumulated, says financial advisor June Mays, author of Women's Guide to Financial Self-Defense.

If you've been out of the loop, the first step is to start communicating regularly with your spouse about finances. A couple of times a year, sit down and review all investments together: stocks, bonds, mutual funds, real estate, and so on. When tax season approaches, go over the forms together and don't sign anything until you've looked it over carefully. Be sure you know where all important documents are stored, including tax records; statements for all retirement, checking, savings, and brokerage accounts; insurance policies; wills; deeds; mortgages; and auto titles.

A good way to ensure that both the husband and wife are equally informed, says Mays, is to switch the bill-paying and investment-management duties every year, so that each partner develops a good working knowledge in both realms.

Staying involved has other benefits too. "Handling finances keeps your mind active and keeps you learning new things," says Karin Maloney Stifler, a certified financial planner in Hudson, Ohio. "It can be empowering for women, and it can be an equalizer in a relationship."

Have a Spending Plan

Every family needs a household budget, but it's even more crucial when one of you decides to forgo a paycheck and you're living on less. Even though you'll need to cut costs and make sacrifices, there are two things you shouldn't give up: paying off any debt you may have accumulated and saving for retirement. Bahr recommends that the first 10 to 15 percent of household income go into a retirement fund.

Work with your spouse to create a budget that allows for those expenses, as well as for your weekly and monthly bills. Then figure out the most comfortable way to divvy up what's left of that single paycheck. Whatever you do, don't fall into the trap of having to ask your husband for money every time you need to get your hair colored or buy a new pair of jeans.

One strategy is for both of you to agree on a monthly sum each of you can spend for discretionary items (clothes, haircuts, gym dues, and golf outings) with no questions asked. Then you deposit that amount into two individual checking or savings accounts. Use your joint account for paying bills and buying things for the house and the kids. Another option is to keep all funds in a joint account but to set a dollar limit on the amount one partner can spend without consulting the other.

"Either way allows both the husband and wife to feel they're retaining their independence," says Stifler. A caveat: The agreed-upon amounts need to be realistic, so there's no temptation to use credit cards, hide spending, or secretly dip into the household funds for personal expenses.

Make Sure You're Insured

Financial planners say one of the most common mistakes SAHMs make is blowing off life insurance, or if they do get it, not buying enough. "A lot of women think it isn't necessary because they don't have a salary that would need to be replaced if they died," says Andrew Keeler, a certified financial planner in Dublin, Ohio. But remember: If you weren't around, your husband would have to hire someone to cook, clean, shop, and care for the children so he could work. So life insurance is essential for both of you. Ideally, you should buy around $500,000 in a term insurance policy to maintain a middle-class lifestyle until your children are grown. (Premiums would depend on your age, your overall health, and the length of your term coverage.)

Disability insurance is also important since there's a much greater chance of being injured or becoming seriously sick. Your husband may be covered through his workplace, but if he isn't, insist that he buy a disability policy. Since you don't have a job, you aren't eligible for coverage. But Stifler advises building a reserve fund that your family could rely on for six months or so if you become too sick or disabled to take care of the house and the kids.

You should also make sure that your family has good health insurance. If you and your children aren't covered under your spouse's policy at work, or if your spouse's employer does not offer insurance, it's key that you buy coverage on your own. One of the most affordable options is a plan with high co-payments and a big deductible. If you go this route, see whether your husband's employer offers a Health Savings Account, which would let him put aside pre-taxed earnings that can be used for healthcare costs. If you simply can't afford to buy health insurance for your family, check to see whether you're eligible for the free or low-cost health plans that many states offer for kids so at least your children will be covered. Keep Money in Your Name

You and your husband should have joint savings for things your family may want in the future: a bigger house, for example, or a college education for your kids. But it's also important for SAHMs to have some savings in their own name. If you don't already have one, open an individual retirement account (IRA). You don't need to be working to contribute up to $4,000 ($5,000 if you're over 50) to a spousal IRA or to a Roth IRA. (Talk to a tax planner to determine which option is best for your family; it all depends on your age and your income.)

You should also have at least one major credit card (not a store card) in your name alone. Be sure to use it -- and to pay your balance on time every month. This will establish your credit history, which is essential for taking out a mortgage or a car loan. If you only have a card on your husband's account, he could easily cancel it if you ever get separated or divorced.

Finally, make sure that your house -- typically a family's biggest asset -- is in both your names (unless there are unusual circumstances, such as special tax considerations or a prenuptial agreement).

Stay Marketable

Right now, you love being able to spend your entire day hanging out with your kids. But there may come a day when you'll want -- or need -- to work.

Here's some bummer news: You're likely to find that your time at home has cost you more than you'd planned. A study by the Center for Work-Life Policy, in New York City, found that women lose an average of 18 percent of their earning power (28 percent if they're in a business field) when they leave the workforce temporarily to raise children. Another study found that moms with college degrees who stay home with kids can suffer a lifetime loss of $1 million in earnings or more, depending on their skills and education.

To increase your odds of getting a decent salary when you're ready to return to work, make the most of your time at home. If you were already established in a career, be sure to stay connected to former work colleagues. Go to lunch with them a few times a year, and shoot them an e-mail if you come across a work-related article you think they'll find useful. Attend conferences in your field, join associations, and continue reading professional publications.

If you don't have much work experience, use your time at home to begin to build a resume. Do volunteer work, and seek out challenges that will help you develop new skills and contacts. If necessary, go back to school.

Above all, it's critical that you have a long-term plan for your career -- and for your finances. This way you'll be fully prepared, no matter what curveballs life throws your way.

I was not planning to file for my resignation this early since I’ll be leaving by end of May this year. But due to the needs of my office and especially my boss, she wants to have enough time to find a new NOVA that would give her the satisfaction I had given her for almost 6 years. Whew!!! I am not sure if I’ll get a comfortable job in my new journey in U.S., a mixed emotions was what I’m feeling all of a sudden, when she finally approved it and forwarded it to the President’s office for approval. Soon, I will leave my old routine works, old but boring yet challenging works here. That’s life; a woman has to do what she has to do. I choose and dream for this and now it is all coming true, and I’m glad these all happens.

I’m sure I’ll be missing everything that I did here, the people, the place, the memories and the experiences that this company had brought me. Helped people in the knowledge that my Alma Mater taught me, but life must move on. I have to move on, start it with the man I have been dreaming to be with in another life and in another country.

Hayyyyyy... time flies so fast for each of us. I can remember before that I was only celebrating my debut [or 18th Birthday] and now here I was. March 18^th I was invited to attend a simple celebration on the 18^th birthday of Ms Rachelle Armonio. While spending the night and observing her merriment, everything that was happened during my days just flashed back. From the sounds, to the 18 roses, the 18 candles for wishes and 18 gifts/ treasures for the debutant that's the usual tradition Filipino girls who turned into maturity age will be. The night was memorable for everyone especially to the debutant whom her family never fails to give her supports, the one who make the party more alive and humorous is with help and humor of their emcee. She did help give life to the party and such; I was wondering when will be the next time I'll be able to attend such a memorable debut celebration.

~ I Finally Got my VISA ~

After our interview last March 3, 2008 start of the days of counting for our VISA delivery, and since I'm in the major cities, it will take me 3 days after the release of the US Embassy to wait and have in handed to me. Delbros texted me last 10th of March [Monday] that they will deliver my VISA a day or two. On the next day, 11^th of March around 5:00pm, a guy came to the office and handed me my visa. The worry is finally over, and I have it on my hand the VISA that I have been waiting for. Thank God! In my excitement, I called up my best co-worker Mercy and showed her the passport. The next step for me to do now is to have my CFO seminar in Manila before leaving Philippines, because it is required by the immigration.

~ My US Embassy Interview ~

02 March – got totally tensed for the next day errand which will be for my US Embassy interview. I slept too early so I could be up early for the next day.

03 March – Finally the day has come

2:00am - woke up too early, take a shower and finalized my documents for the appointment. [I photocopied Jeff's copy for my appointment so I could show it to the USEM guard]

3:00am - left the house with my Brother-in-law, since he will have a night shift work in the US Embassy printing press.

4:30am - arrived at the US Embassy's and proceed to the guard house. Too early for my 7:30 appointment, was advice to wait at the waiting area and wait for the guard to announce for our turn. I've seen Pia and Carren, which I met during our medical examination at SLEC. Since, we have the same date of interview we decided to stick together. That way, I don’t get bored waiting and at least had someone to share my feelings and excitement.

6:30am - 7:30 scheduled was called to get inside the embassy. I showed my appointment letter [the one from Jeff's copy], Identification Card [my company ID]

· Got inspected by the guard and an automated detector to scan your bags and any things that you had. BEWARE!!! Cellphone is strictly prohibited, better not bring any or face the consequences.

6:40am - was already inside the Embassy and waited at the blue chair that was arranged and wait for row to stand up and submitted our form to the first window that was called us, what should prepared will be:

· [2] DS 157 form [filled up and with bank printed at the bank for the payment]

· [2] DS 156K form [filled up and with attached 2x2 pictures on it]

· [1] DS 156 form

- The lady who was in-charge to scan my paper asked me about my passport and I told them that it was at St. Luke [SLEC], she said "OK" and gave me the electronic number of "7097" and told me to wait for my name to be called for finger scanning.

This time, since I didn't brought cellphone with me and I have not watch on my wrist, I never got the chance to check out every time I was called. So the time was assumed here:

7:50am - got worried because my name wasn't been called for the finger scanning, and after 20 minutes of waiting I was called to go to WINDOW Y, and hurriedly I know there is something wrong. The in-charge asked me about my Medical Result since SLEC haven't forwarded it to them yet. They told me that they called the clinic and told them that they gave me the envelop which I didn't get any thing from them. So the guy told me to wait for my name to be called.

8:15am - I was called for finger scanning at Window 16. Took my number and was ask my complete name and undergo the finger scanning. Given back my number and told me to wait for my name to be flashed on the screen for the next step.

8:30am - Number was flashed to proceed to Window 29, a woman aged 40's pre-interview me. Asked for my, Birth Certificate, NBI, Cenomar, Form 1040 – 2005 & 2006 and gave me back 2005, Affidavit of Support, pictures, and emails from Jeff. She asked me questions like:

· Who is my petitioner?

· What is he to me?

· Where did we first me?

· When were the first time he visited me, and the last time he visited me?

· What is his job?

· She asked me if I was from Davao City. I said no, we just visit the place often. I told her I am from Gen. Santos City.

· She asked if he ever married before. And I said he never get married since.

· She even asked me if I'm already 26, and I said YES I am.

- I was so polite to her since she's treating me rudely at first; I provided her a photocopy and a certified true copy of my BC since I'm sure that they could not read my authenticated one due to its very black output. She even told me strictly something like "Did I asked you to provide me a photocopy of your BC?", and what I responded to her? "Well, you see madam, I provided you one since I know that you could never read my authenticated BC since it's to dark." And then she looked it and without a word, she just node her head… hahaha… now, it turns out that she was the RUDE one, I mean, just because she's there working? She could treat me such a shit??? Some were nice, and would even give you a big smile. Some were just actually born as rude and cruel. Jealousy perhaps? I hope not… well, I can't blame them, if they choose to be cruel.

8:50am - My number was again flashed in the screen for the console interview. My spirits were not at peace yet due to the pre-interview that was been done to me by that woman! The male in-charge was calling my number and proceeded to Window 31. A blonde American woman ages on her 30's was there giving me a big smile, and so do I, she asked me to hold for a minute, while she's verifying something on her computer. Then:

· Raise my right hand and Swear: Everything that was written on the papers was true, I said YES, I swear.

· She was scanning my papers and asked me questions like:

o Could you tell me about your fiancé?

o What is his job?

o Where did we first me?

o Where did the last time I saw him?

o If I plan to work in US? The funny thing was, I put No in my document and I answered her YES, someday to help my fiancé.

· You should be HONEST into everything that you told to the console, they're psychologist so they would know if you're lying or hiding some things.

· After the interview, she told me: "Well wait for your medical results, and I don't see any problems on your paper". I was smiling and so does she, gave thank you and leave the room, waited for my name to be call for the next step.

9:00am - Name was called at Window 37, was told again that they will wait for my medical results again and I can pay for the visa delivery.

9:05am - Paid my visa delivery. And Hurray!!! I'm done for the day.!!!

When I left the establishment, I was still hanging of what the console told me. I'm sure that I didn't have any problem with my medical since during the time they gave me my x-ray film they told me they'll send my result and passport to the US Embassy. I got out around 11am and proceed to eat lunch since I haven't eaten any thing on that day. But I'm fine now since the Interview is finally over. To be honest with you, I'm thanking GOD for the guidance, for giving me a smooth procedures because I never felt any nervous like shaking or feeling so cold during the whole process. Except of what happened during my pre-interview, I guess she's the one who just treated me not that good at all. But I'm thanking all of them too, for the chance they gave me to be with my fiancé soon. Hurray!!!

Let say, there are other people were bless from up above. Others were just unfortunate and needs to crawl up more higher than what was been expected. And let me say, I never go the BIG SMILE from Google lately. I never even experience in my life having a Google page rank higher than 7… I think I’m still lucky aside from others who just never got page rank of 7, and I am not sure if I did have the same page rank in Google. I did my best in order to come up of having a higher page rank, but I guess that hard work isn’t enough in order for me to be paid for it. Am I been punished? What do I have to do in order to get at least the maximum of page rank or PR 4? Am I that demanding / ambitious of getting that page rank? I hope not, all I just want is to at least experience having the page rank for at least in my page… That is why, sometimes it was totally disappointing knowing that my hard work isn't good enough. But I ain't giving up on this, challenge might be the answer in order for me to reach the Page Rank that I am wishing to have.

I’ve got NOTHING AT ALL on Smorty Reviews after I got back from my vacation last January of 2008 and since then? I never got any reviews from Smorty. I wonder why? The day has finally come to end up the unfinished business between the two famous and amazing boxers in the world in the feather weight division. Approximately, 12:00 noon Pacific Time, the fight of the two legends has to come an end and had to prove to the world that really is the best among the best. The fight between Marquez and Pacquiao was totally scaring and a take breathing one, everyone was really astonished when Pacquiao knock-out Marquez in Round 3 and there is another knock-out but “thank god for Marquez it was saved by the bell”. Every Filipino was really crossing fingers of the said fight. Actually since I can’t afford on the pay per view, I listened to the radio and did listened very carefully, the fight reached the 12 rounds and everyone was really thrilled of the split decision by the judges. And when it was announced that they do have a NEW WBC FEATHER WEIGHT CHAMPION, everyone was jumping and hugging for it truly was shown to the world that Filipino raises up into sports. I didn’t know what’s wrong with her lately [referring to my unit head], she’s been acting so weird to me though and I don’t understand her. Her actions and attitudes the first time that I was hired here just came back all of a sudden. Is this because I’ll be leaving soon? Is it because of her personal life? Or is it because she just can’t do whatever she wishes to be done since there is a new president that she can’t be tolerated. Why does she do this to me? I have not done anything wrong with that right? So why put it all at me like I was blamed for whatever that is going on to her? It’s not just fair for me you know. And I just hope that she won’t be acting such things like that to me after all these years.

29^th of February is the rest day for everyone. I don’t need to wake up such early in the morning for the schedule. To find out that I got bruises on my left arm where the blood was taken from me for the HIV examination and such, I was asked by the kind nurse to close my palm, ignorantly I closed it so firmly and I think that's the reason why I got all the bruises, a very big bruise. My right shoulder is in pain as well due to the vaccine that was shot on me, and it got bruised too and itchy and painful. Good thing that when I got my embassy appointment, the bruise on my left arm was gone. Surely they're gonna asked questions about what happened to me just like the repeated questions that was been asked to me at home.

I was so confident thinking that since I click the reviews online at blogivite, I thought I have it reserved. Nope! I was way wrong since I just clicked it to open in the other window without accepting it yet. When I came back to check it out, and reserved it was gone and means it was been reserved by others. I lost $15 in a way, means I didn’t take a careful look on it. Now, it’s a lesson for me on what happened here today, since I’m so into earning more cash for my soon departure. I tried refreshing the page hoping that I could at least got another set of the reviews but I think they’re done and its all been accepted. Now I’m kinda blaming myself about this, hope there’s another set, since I do have enough time to post more reviews today. Maybe better luck next time and a lesson learned from what happened to me today.

~ My Medical Experience at St. Luke's Extension Clinic [SLEC] ~

25^th February – Edsa Revolution, there were many applicants who were stuck and was told to go back on the next day for the appointment. Because they said that the notice of the Holiday was issued to them very late afternoon last 22^nd. Such a bad idea, what we did? My sister Gladys and niece Pretty went to take a walk passing by Bay Walk, US Embassy, up to Luneta Park.

2^6th February - The second time for me to go back to SLEC. Woke up at 2am for preparation and arrives at St. Luke's Clinic around 4:30am. There were plenty who got there earlier than I am, met new friends namely Carren. I got number 238, Carren was behind me so we get along so well, and we chatted and still meet other K1 cases.

What I have with me:

· Medical appointment [what I brought with me is the printed appointment via online, since I didn't get my packet]

· Passport which will be checked by the guard upon entrance of SLEC

· 2 pcs 2x2 white background picture [no earings for female]

8:00am – the offices was opened and transactions were started

· got waited for our batch number to be called for the reception area

· Got collected my documents, told them I didn't get my packet yet, taken a picture and told me to proceed to 5^th floor for payment.

· I didn't noticed the time flies, hurriedly got there and paid the amount of $145 = PHP 5,945, I was told to proceed 3^rd floor for chest X-ray, but yet it was still on the 4^th floor met another visaya girl with her kid, and I was told that I can do just any of those on the list, its not really in order.

· I got my blood/urine test, x-ray, immunization interview, preceded to 5^th floor again for my eyes, height, weight and vital signs.

· When I was called for my PE, I was told to go back after my menses since I did have my 2^nd day of period. I left them and went straight home.

28^th February - I went back to SLEC for my PE since it's my last period of menses.

9:46am – Arrived SLEC – put receipt @ window A – named was called to proceed to the 5^th floor U.S. Counter for my PE.

10:51am – Done with PE & handed forms to me & advised to go to 2^nd floor. When I was there I was asked to have some lunch since it will take hours for the result.

12:45pm – Came back & waited for minutes, was called around 1:05 ensue to vaccination room for my vaccine of MMP, & counsel to wait for my name to be called at ground floor.

1:40pm – Name was called @ Counter A given my passport & 2x2 picture, waited again for my name to be called.

2:05pm – Name got called to Window E, they showed me my PDS forms, the picture taken on the 1^st day & asked "is this you?" I said "Yes". They asked my middle name, Birth Date, and Age. Handed my X-ray film as well as the document worksheet on my medical and receipt, I was also told that they'll be the one to send the results, passport and pics to the embassy for my interview.

2:30pm – Yoohoo!!! I'm done with my Medical Examination finally.. Thanks to God!!!

3:00pm – Hurriedly proceed to NBI in Sta. Cruz for my renewal, since I got trouble getting a new one in my hometown. After 10 minutes after we got there, I finally got my renewed NBI clearance… woohooo!!! Thank you Lord!!!

This day is such an easy and stress free for me on all the things that I had done. The tense for all the feelings were vanished. Got a BIG SMILE through the rest of the day.
