The Basement of Your Home Matters More Than You Probably Think

Lots of people make good use of their basements.  They use them to store things that they want out of the way but don’t want to put in the attic.  It’s pretty typical to walk into a basement and see boxes of old childhood toys and clothing, old scrapbooks and loose photographs, the odd broken-down bike or two, and (perhaps most importantly for some of us) stacks of old tax returns and other important documents. 

The basement is also where you’ll usually find a home’s furnace, hot water tank and clothes washer and dryer.  Like the items we mentioned above, they’re not things you’d want damaged or destroyed. 

And then there are the homes with finished basements.  Finishing off a basement is time consuming and expensive.  Besides the flooring and paneling or drywall, a finished basement always has some comfortable furniture for people to sit on.  Many finished basements also have a TV and/or stereo system.  Some even have a pool table or a wet bar.  None of these items – not the flooring, not the paneling/drywall, not the comfy furniture, not the TV or stereo system, and not the pool table or wet bar - are cheap.  Of course, a finished basement will almost always also have a furnace, hot water tank, washer and dryer, and some items stored somewhere. 

So, it might not always be at the top of your mind, but the condition of your basement matters more than you probably think. 

Even a little water in your basement can damage or destroy the things you have down there.  The damage could include soggy papers and photos, ruined carpeting, stained drywall, ruined toys and old kids’ clothing, rusted-out appliances and so on.   But beyond the direct damage that water can cause, a basement that’s even just slightly damp can be the perfect breeding ground for mold.  Not only that, but water entering your basement could be a sign of structural damage to your foundation walls (of course, the reason could also be fairly minor and easily fixed – but you won’t know until you get it checked out).

If you really think about it, you’ll realize that effective basement flood control is vitally important.
