3 Easy Ways To Lower Your Home Heating Bills

With the latest round of energy price rises, more and more people are finding it harder to meet their ever-rising heating bills. But there are some things that we can all do to help keep them as low as possible. Here are three of our best suggestions for easy ways to cut your heating bills

1. Review your energy supplier.
The first thing that you should do is check that you are on the best deal for your energy supply.  There are many comparison websites that you can use to help with this review and you will need to look out your old bills to get details of your energy usage for the last twelve months. Once you have this, you simply enter this information plus some personal details about you and where you live and you will be given a list of results showing the cheapest energy tariff available for you, together with details on how to switch suppliers.

Some companies also offer further discounts for paying by monthly direct debit and using paperless (electronic) billing, so don’t forget to check if you can make further savings by doing either of these things.

2. Switch it off or turn it down.
It sounds really simple, but one of the most obvious ways you can save money on your heating bills is to simply use it less. For example, can you turn your heating thermostat down by a degree or two?  Any reduction in the amount of heat needing to be generated will translate into lower bills.

Equally, if you have your heating programmed to come on at different times throughout the day, can you cut it back by even just 10 minutes in the morning and at night? Although it  doesn’t sound like much,  that’s 20 minutes a day, which works out at 30 hours of energy use saved over the course of December, January and February.

3. Stop the cold getting in and the heat getting out
Our final recommendation is to make your home as draft free and well insulated as possible.  The goal is to keep the cold air outside and the warm air inside and there are lots of simple things you can do to help with this.  Close your curtains as soon as it gets dark to keep the heat from escaping via windows or vents. If you have a drafty house, then draft excluders – long sausage shaped cushions –  at all the doors are a great way to stop drafts getting in and heat getting out.

You should also look at the insulation you have around your home – in your loft (if you have one) the Energy Saving Trust recommend that you have at least 270 mm of loft insulation to provide the maximum benefit to your home.  Don’t forget the loft hatch as well – make sure you have an insulated hatch to stop the warm air from the house seeping into the loft.  Finally, it’s worth considering an insulating jacket around your hot water tank to keep the water as hot as possible for as long as possible.

  1. SInce we moved to our new home I don't think we will have that problem since our place is so insulated that we feel nice and warm even though we are not using heater.

We always adjust the thermostat when we are not home. We have lots of windows that are luckily double so they help a lot for keeping in the heat or cold air.

  5. Practical tips here and I do make sure that we turn off lights that are not in use and unplug everything to save energy, and our windows and doors are always closed, especially now that it's almost winter, our heaters have been turned on already.

  6. Great tips and the number 3 is really a big problem here in the house as our daughter likes to hold the door openwhile taking her pet out. And its true that it can truly rise up the heating bills.
