Chimneys and Why They Need Chimney Sweeps

A chimney serves a very important function for the fireplace in your home; it carries the smoke that would fill up your house up and out into the outside air. To avoid potential chimney fires, you need to keep your fireplace and chimney clean and properly maintained. A Fiddler on the Roof is a type of chimney service that can include chimney repair and all that has to be done to keep your chimney working optimally.

Chimney Caps, Chases, and Flues

At the top of a chimney, you will find a chimney cap, which some chimneys have to keep rodents and birds from making your chimney their home. It also will keep water from getting inside your chimney and ultimately into the fireplace. The chimney chase can be made of cement or metal and is put on the top of the chimney after the brick or stonework is in place. Its primary purpose is to protect the top of the chimney from damage that can be caused by water and extreme weather conditions.

Flues and Flue Linings

The flue is the open area where the smoke and gases leave your fireplace. You can have multiple flues according to how many heat sources you have. The flue will either have a metal lining or a clay lining, and this is where the chimney sweeps come in. When particulates from the fire become attached to the lining of the flue, they can burn into a flame and cause a fire in or on your roof. The chimney sweep has special tools that will be used to clean the debris off of the interior of the flue. With a camera, they can assess the condition of the flue lining and determine the best way to proceed. While this is taking place, the chimney sweep can show you the video they have taken so you can see the condition of the interior of the chimney as well. The chimney damper can also be checked by a company like A Fiddler on the Roof to make sure it is working properly and so you will have no problems keeping the smoke from going the wrong direction while you are using the fireplace.

  1. I learned the hard way about having a chimney cleaned with my last home. I had just bought it and trusted when they say it had just been cleaned, it had not and caused a lot of damage.

  3. Reminds me of the episode I saw in CSI where a man's dead body was found in the chimney.

  4. We do a chimney sweep before every winter just to be safe. I've heard of so many awful stories where people have lost everything just because they didn't clean the chimney. Scary!

  6. Since we moved back to our house out tin the country, I don't remember we used the fireplace. And I hear birds chirping up in the chimney everyday. I guess there's a nest or something like that. 'Need to clean that.

  7. I really miss having a chimney, we don't really need them at all here in FL.

  8. Back in our old house in Kansas we used a Woodstove to heat up the house and yes we do have a chimney. It does need maintenance and cleaning up or you will be sorry. Or your house will be all smoked up. Occasionally we have birds get stuck and some unfortunately die. How sad.
