How to get rid of unwanted smells with a dehumidifier

When it comes to strange, unwanted smells around the house, one of the biggest causes is damp. This could be a result of a previous leak, walls that have become damp through poor ventilation or an old problem with pipes. These problems often cause mould and mildew to grow in the corner of rooms or on window surrounds and clothing or furnishings that are located close by, which then starts to smell. But odd, musty odours caused by dampness can easily be shifted by making use of a dehumidifier.

How do dehumidifiers work?

Essentially, a dehumidifier works by drawing out all the moisture found in the air and transferring it into its liquid form within the machine, which can then be discarded. Looking at it in a more complex way, the dehumidifier collects air into an internal part of the machine, which is then extreme cooled using specialist internal coils. As it is cooled, moisture from the air collects on the coils as droplets of water. These droplets then collect in a tank or bucket below the coils, before the air is re-heated and recirculated into the room.

Are there other benefits?

Not only does a dehumidifier draw out the moisture from the air that causes the mould and mildew found in homes, making rooms clearer and cleaner, dehumidifier benefits cover many other areas too. They can also help those who regularly suffer from allergies or respiratory problems such as asthma. Dust mites are a common cause for allergy sufferers and love a warm, damp place in which to thrive. They can live in bedding, furnishings and the air, but the dryer conditions caused by using a dehumidifier can certainly limit their growth.

Likewise, use of a dehumidifier can also help those who suffer from skin conditions such as dryness or itchiness by keeping the skin more comfortable. And for those who find they are affected quite regularly by static electricity, use of a dehumidifier in the home may help prevent the amount of static produced by the human body.

A dehumidifier can help in other areas of the home too and will definitely increase the life of your furnishings. Over time moisture in the air will damage your furniture and upholstery, however a dryer atmosphere will save this damage from happening so easily. You can also avoid wooden furnishings, such as drawers or cupboard doors, suffering from moisture bloat and becoming difficult to move or not fitting properly.

How do I choose the right dehumidifier?

There are lots of dehumidifiers to choose from and they come in a wide range of sizes and styles, so it will often depend on how and where you need to use the machine itself. Making use of a dehumidifier needn't be a ridiculous cost though and small, portable versions are relatively inexpensive. And if they manage to remove bad smalls, unsightly mould and mildew build ups and help you enjoy your home again, surely the cost will be completely worth it.

  2. I never knew how a dehumidifier worked, it's really interesting when you think about it. I definitely find odd smells around the house that I have no idea where it's coming from. I see mold/mildew in the wall/window corners since we live in a very old house. Plus I like that it can help with dry skin because mine is just out of control. Thanks for sharing!

  13. We have one down the basement, and it helps with the muggy smell. I just need to empty it once it gets full with water from the moist.
