TADASHISHOJI Collections

Noted fashion designer Cabiria made news in 2013 at New York Fashion Week by featuring a collection of styles for plus size women. The curvy full figured modes were a departure from the stick thin models traditionally featured in couture fashion shows. Reviews were mix on styling and creativity but no one could deny the significance of the event. Cabiria showcased bold stripes, animal prints, and bright colors using classic silhouettes designed to flatter the fuller figure.

Other designers have gradually begun to offer either select pieces or whole lines devoted to fuller figures. However, only part of this trend is a crusade for inclusion and equality. The facts of today’s woman translate into dollars and cents for smart designers. The average American woman wears a size 12 while many of the styles featured on the runway are clearly sizes 0 through 4. By creating garments for larger sizes, designers can capture a larger share of the women’s retail clothing market.

Designer Lori Ruffin started a line in 2009 for the average size 12 woman but soon discovered a huge untapped market for sizes 12 and above. She developed the Sean Anthony “Touch of Urban” Collection and offered everything from plus size gowns to playful shorts, denim jackets and daytime dresses. If these trends hold, true we should be seeing more and more designers expanding their lines to appeal to average and larger sized women.
