Furnishing Your Guest Room

How often does your guest room actually get used by guests staying the night? If you're like most people, the answer is "not very often!". It's even less likely that it will be used by guests staying multiple nights, so it makes sense to furnish the room to cover numerous uses and eventualities. Read on to find out how.

Bedroom Furniture
Of course, the primary function of a guest room is to provide somewhere for your guests to sleep if they are staying the night. Therefore, the most important piece of furniture in the entire room is the bed. You'll need a double bed at least. A larger bed, such as a king size, is great but as the larger bedrooms are likely to be used for you and your family – the people who permanently live in the house – you may well not have room for any bed larger than a double. If you don't have space to keep a full-size bed in the room permanently, consider a folding bed, which you can buy for about £200. These fold up for storage so they take up less room than a standard bed. Another option is a sofa bed, which allows you to use the room for other purposes during the day and when you don't have guests.

A guest room often doubles as extra storage for your family, so it makes sense to look at options for increasing the storage space. A great option for this is to buy a bed which converts the otherwise wasted space in the divan of the bed to useful storage. There are several different types you can buy. Some have drawers in the divan, which can be used for storing anything from the bed linen to shoes and anything in between. Another option, which provides rather more space, is the type of bed, which allows you to lift the mattress, revealing a large open storage section in the divan. Only use this type to store items, which you need to access very infrequently! Some models even have both a larger compartment and drawers.

Other Furniture
If you're lucky, enough to have the space, sofas and chairs make a great addition to a guest room. These also allow you to use the room as an additional sitting room when it’s not being used for sleeping. It's also nice for your guests to have somewhere to sit other than the bed!

A wardrobe is very handy in a guest room. It allows your visitors to hang up their clothes to avoid creasing and to get their bags out of the way, and is especially important if they're staying for more than a night or two. You can use a wardrobe for storage yourself when the room isn't in use, especially if it has drawers or cupboards.

Everyone likes to be able to put items such as a glass of water and a book near them at night, so bedside tables are a thoughtful touch. Preferably, you should also provide an alarm clock and a light.

Conclusion
As we have seen, there are some pieces of furniture you must have in a guest room – primarily a bed of some kind! However, you can adjust the type of bed to suit your space and what you use the room for at other times. Other furniture is more optional but you should really have a wardrobe and bedside tables for your guests to use.
